What’s up in this edition👇
🗞️ On the news
🏛️ Regulation
No major regulatory updates: The week was relatively quiet on the regulatory front for the Australian gig economy. However, ongoing developments surrounding the "Fair Work Legislation Amendment (Gig Workers)" bill are still in focus. This bill, introduced in August, aims to improve gig worker rights by setting minimum standards for pay, conditions, and protection against unfair deactivation. Discussions between stakeholders continue towards its implementation in July 2024.
📣 Industry News:
Delivery platforms adapt to the holiday season: Food delivery giants like Uber Eats and Deliveroo are ramping up promotions and incentives to attract riders and customers during the busy holiday shopping season. Some also offer special perks and bonuses for drivers to ensure sufficient coverage during peak hours.
Gig work opportunities fluctuate: Demand for various gig services appears to fluctuate depending on the platform and location. Some reports suggest a slight dip in delivery work due to post-Christmas shopping fatigue, while ride-sharing platforms might see an increase due to holiday travel and celebrations.
Unionisation talks continue: Negotiations between unions and various gig platforms regarding representation and collective bargaining for workers are ongoing. The Transport Workers' Union (TWU) is pushing for improved rights and conditions for ride-sharing and delivery drivers.
Other key points:
Safety concerns remain: There were no significant incidents reported in the past week, but concerns about worker safety, particularly for delivery riders, continue to be a topic of discussion. The TWU recently renewed its call for mandatory safety training and better insurance coverage for platform workers.
Debate on platform fees: The high service fees charged by some gig platforms remain a point of contention, with workers arguing that they eat into their already limited earnings. This issue is likely to gain further attention as regulatory discussions progress.
📈 Latest Trends
💰 Get paid in Crypto
While still in the early stages, several platforms are exploring crypto payments for gig workers, each with its unique approach and focus. For example
Fiverr: The popular gig platform recently partnered with Coinbase to offer its US-based freelancers the option to receive payments in USDC, a stablecoin pegged to the US dollar. This provides a less volatile cryptocurrency option for worker stability.
