Get paid holidays as a freelancer...

Still figuring out how to get paid holidays as a self-employed person? 5 ways to balance your side-hustle, career AND  have a social life

Work is overwhelming. Let’s be real, no amount of Linked In motivation can get you to overcome the nostalgia of last weekend. But wait, what was so special about that? After working without a second’s break for an entire week you got two days off to figure out where you are in life, do your laundry and look at what’s new with the internet. That’s how most of the Saturdays have been going lately and Sundays, well, it’s Sunday right? At least you kept the long overdue promise of downing a coldie with your friends. Do you really miss that time or are you just scared of another stressful Monday?

Truth is work will always feel like work. Upside is that it will make the breaks worth working for. Having a clear objective and motivation helps. Now let’s cut to the chase.

Don’t party, NETWORK

One of the many ways to enjoy and upskill yourself instead of waking up with a terrible hangover is attending networking events that are hosted by groups and communities to engage with aspirants and help them achieve their potential.

What is the point of these events?

  • You meet like-minded people who share the same interests and career aspirations as you do.

  • Even if you do not have a fixed aim to grow your career you can always check out the possible opportunities.

  • If you have been facing a challenge for too long at improving your career this is the place that can fetch you solutions

  • There are several brands looking for suitable candidates and the informal setting is perfect to make an honest impression.

There’s the social life of your dreams!

GOAL, don’t just score

Brief assessments and change of work pattern can be beneficial in the short run, especially if you have a lot of different and unrelated things on your plate. But it will not bring long term balance.

The difference between setting a goal and scoring well in personal assessments is that you lose sight of these scores as soon as something more challenging comes up. For example, you want to be a 10 in terms of finishing an entire week’s work in three days. That is a time management goal but not properly articulated. Your goal should be well objectified and motivational. If you set your goal to the number of days you want to dedicate to self-care or travel or your hobbies you will naturally find it easier to achieve because you are prioritizing the reward, not the task. Once a clear goal is set you can then find a pattern to work through your tasks.

DEFINE, don’t fiddle

Don’t try to cheat your brain. Taking on more work when there is clearly a sufficient amount pending on your calendar will not help in boosting your reflex. Do you think you work well under pressure? Think again. A car runs faster when its fuel burns faster. But at a stretch, this has adverse effects on the engine. Define your workload and set your pace accordingly.

ORGANIZE, don’t disorientate

It’s okay. This is a safe space to admit that you may often lose a sense of direction when you try to focus on your to-do list. The reasons are simple. Our brains are conditioned to detect problems first so as to trigger a response. When you begin to lose direction and flow your brain automatically picks up the challenge and forces you to avoid it. Another reason is that your tasks are listed. Regardless whether it's long or short it’s not interesting enough for your brain to engage with. As soon as the task list is out of sight. You lose your focus. \

The simple solution is to organize your work. Create a mood board for yourself, add toggle elements to stimulate your brain’s energy and curiosity, use online tools to manage your time and flow.
